A tourist shared a video on a social media platform on Monday, saying, "A marmot snatched my key, and local Tibetan villagers are helping me dig it out." The video shows a man reaching into a hole to retrieve the key, surrounded by a crowd.
The tourist said in the video that even the village head was helping to retrieve the key, calling it "the most memorable experience of the self-drive tour in Ganzi."
A local village official confirmed the incident, saying that officials, police officers, and villagers all helped search for the car key, according to the media report.
The official recalled that they first tried using a wire to hook the key, but the hole was deep and winding. They then tried using magnets to attract the key, but that also failed.
"Ultimately, we had to resort to manual digging," the official said. "The digging started around noon and lasted four to five hours," the official said.
"We ended up digging up the marmot's home.” The key was finally returned to the tourist, he added.
The tourist posted an update the next day showing the key being retrieved and expressed gratitude to local authorities and villagers.
