Southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region has achieved marked development over the past six decades, with regional GDP reaching 155 times that of 1965, Wang Junzheng, Party chief of Xizang, said on Tuesday.

In 2024, Xizang's regional GDP reached 276.5 billion yuan ($38.52 billion)—155 times that of 1965 in constant prices—with an average annual growth rate of 8.9 percent, Wang told a press conference held by the State Council Information Office to highlight the economic and social development achievements of the autonomous region on the 60th anniversary of its founding.

In 2024, the per capita disposable income of urban residents in the autonomous region reached 55,444 yuan, 121 times that of 1965, with an average annual growth of 8.5 percent. The per capita disposable income of farmers and herdsmen reached 21,578 yuan, 199 times that of 1965, with an average annual growth rate of 9.4 percent.

Local fiscal revenue reached 27.7 billion yuan, 1,258 times that of 1965, with an average annual growth rate of 12.9 percent. It took Xizang 50 years to achieve its first 100 billion yuan in regional GDP, while the second 100 billion was reached in just six years, Wang said.

Xizang's infrastructure has significantly improved, according to local officials.

By the end of 2024, the total length of roads in Xizang reached 124,900 kilometers, with operational railway mileage at 1,359 kilometers, and the number of domestic and international air routes increasing to 183.

All administrative villages now have access to fiber-optic and 4G internet networks.

Major projects have also seen accelerated progress during the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021-2025) period in Xizang, with cumulative planned investment exceeding 400 billion yuan being implemented. Construction of Sichuan-Xizang Railway made significant progress while work began on a hydropower project in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River.

Amid rapid growth in the region's tourism industry, Xizang received over 63.89 million tourists from home and abroad in 2024, up 15.8 percent year-on-year.
