In recent years, Tibet's Thangka industry develops very well and it is gradually becoming a characteristic cultural industry with strong influence. According to incomplete statistics, now there are about 2,000 full-time Thangka painters in Tibet. They can produce thousands of high-end Thangka products every year and the annual output value is over 100 million yuan.
To promote the development of Thangka industry, since 2010, Tibet has successfully held 6 sessions of "Thanka Expo". In addition, 99 Tibet Autonomous Regional level Thangka painters are appraised and elected. 4 Thangka painters are granted the honour of "Tibetan Thangka Art Master". The Tibet Thangka Academy is established. Besides, the local standard system construction work of Tibetan Thangka is launched.
With the development of Thangka industry, the economic benefits derived by Thangka also becomes apparent. By the end of the 13th Five-Year Plan, it is estimated that the Thangka industry will lead about 6,300 people to get employed. The annual high-end Thangka output can reach 5,000 pieces and the annual value can be about 700 million yuan.
