As Hoh Xil’s publicity film for applying for the World Heritage List came out, an increasing number of people around the world saw and learned about this magical land.
As the first site inscribed to the List on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and 12th in China, local people are quite proud of this credit.
After a day’s work, Chen Yi, executive director and videographer of the publicity film, together with the camera crew went back to Sonam Dargye Protection Station on the afternoon of July 9.
“There are a lot of things worth watching in Hoh Xil. We have focused on shooting photos and videos of Hoh Xil since 2009 and we have been to Hoh Xil for many times to learn about local landforms, meteorological phenomena, plants and animal,” said Chen.

According to Chen Yi, the camera crew from Qinghai Yunji Manbu Culture Communication Co., Ltd. started to prepare for the shooting seven to eight years ago. The crew of over ten people has been to Hoh Xil for many times to master wild animals’ law of life and reproduction cycle and collect photos and videos.

“Tibetan antelopes are sensitive to sound and odor. In order not to alarm them, we tried our best not to make any sound and odor so we only had frozen and dried food while shooting,” Chen said.
Once, in an effort to record how Tibetan antelopes reproduce, three crew members went into a bunker at about 03:00 in the morning. It happened to be the rainy season in Zhuonai Lake and water went into the 60cm-tall bunker.
In order not to disturb the flock, the three staff had minimized eating and moving, stood in water and bent over to shoot in the bunker for a week. One crew member was even sent to the protection station for treatment due to dehydration.

Chen Yi said, “Hoh Xil is a mysterious land for China and the whole world. But only few people really know this place. Hoh Xil is not as harsh and horrible as people think of. Local wild animals are quite adorable, local plants are quite varied and local scenery is gorgeous. As Qinghai people, we are responsible for showing the world the amazing Hoh Xil. We hope more people will know Hoh Xil via the publicity film.”
