Ngachenbu: one of the most beautiful volunteers countrywide

Ngachenbu is a villager from Yunling Township, Dechen County, Yunnan Province. As Meri Snow Mountain becomes more and more well-known, a growing number of visitors and pilgrims come over. So do the wastes.

More visitors bring more wastes. Due to no fixed garbage collection devices along the 200km long road around Meri Snow Mountain then, scattered wastes could frequently be seen.

In 2005, Ngachenbu shared the idea to collect the wastes and protect the environment with his villagers and everyone agreed with him.

It took over 20 days for the 33 persons dispatched by the 33 households in Ngachenbu’s village and over 20 horses to clean up wastes along the road of pilgrims.

Biodegradable wastes like food and clothes would be buried in a certain place and plastic wastes would be packed and carried to a certain place to dispose.

Henceforth, Ngachenbu would organize villagers to collect wastes along the road of pilgrims every year.

In 2007, Ngachenbu raised money to buy about 400 bamboo dustbins and install them along roads of pilgrims in Yunnan’s Dechen, Tibet’s Zayul and Zogang.

Exposed to the wind, sun and rain, these bamboo dustbins were too broken to be used continuously after 2 years.

Afterwards, with the help of the scenic area administration of Meri Snow Mountain and his friends, Ngachenbu managed to find craftsmen to make rubber dustbins.

He together with local villagers installed the 500 durable dustbins and environmental protection signs with Tibetan and Mandarin on along roads of pilgrims across Yunnan Province and Tibet Autonomous Region.

Ngachenbu and the villagers have voluntarily collected over 400 tons of wastes since 2015 along the road around Meri Snow Mountain.
