Hor Norbu Yulgyel is a painter of Dongduo thangka of the Bon religion. In 2011, he was awarded as a regional first-class thangka painter. Dating back to more than 700 years ago, the Dongduo family has been famous for excellent painting skills. With paintings reserving the crafts of Zhangzhung Bon thangka styles, the family has won a reputation known as Zhangzhung Dongduo thangka style.
“Convenient traffic, developed network, and great diversity. The traditional art of thangka has never been as prosperous as today. That’s what I feel.” Hor Norbu Yulgyel said.
Tibetan people have created a lot of characteristic and profound folk cultural heritages. As a representative art form, thangkas, or known as scroll paintings in Chinese, are cloth paintings bordered with colorful laces or stitched with silks. Reflecting many aspects of Tibetan history, politics, and social culture and life, thangkas are praised as the “encyclopedia of Tibetan people”.
No doubt, Hor Norbu Yulgyel and his paintings, together with other painting styles, have entered a prosperous time of inheriting traditions and making innovations.
