Dawa Tsering who didn’t understand numbered musical notation and music theory now has become an all-rounder who is able to compose, write scripts and play various roles in the field of folk art. Now, he is 53 years old and has been on the way to his dream for 28 years.
Tibet Autonomous Region is renowned for its singing and dancing. People in Shigatse are also good at singing and dancing. In 1985, the Kangmar Folk Art Troupe (Ulan Muqir Publicity Team) was formally founded. Dawa Tsering was admitted by the troupe due to his excellent artistic talent and started his full-time publicity. In this way, his hobby turned into career requirement.
He had attended school only for a few years and didn't receive education from regular professional art school, so in order to open the door to the art world, he must overcome obstacles and start from scratch.
Starting from notes 1234, Dawa Tsering specially learnt from a private teacher and understood numbered musical notation in three months.
In addition to constantly improving the skill to play the Zhanian, the Tibetan six-stringed zither, he has also learnt dulcimer by himself. For cross talks and short plays which are widely acclaimed by the public, he also diligently tries to fathom characteristics of personality and behavior of various figures in life and strengthens performance training so as to pursue the unity of body and spirit. Meanwhile, he has collected various authentic art forms like folk song and dance at different regions. Through elaborate refinement and re-creation, he has brought work shanty, drinking song and pastoral song unique to Kangmar to various stages in and out of Tibet Autonomous Region.
In recent years, he has been proficient in operating acoustical control equipment during performance through self-study.
Dawa Tsering has persisted for 28 years with amazing willpower. He has been the head of Kangmar Folk Art Troupe for 20 years, but he is still active in the grass root and leads all members of the troupe to present “cultural feast” to farmers and herdsmen.
Nowadays, the Kangmar Folk Art Troupe has been well-known in Shigatse, even in the whole Tibet. Over 60% of new songs and plays of the troupe have been created by Dawa Tsering.
At the 10th China Art Festival held in this year, Dawa Tsering was granted as “Folk Art Star” by Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China.
Dawa Tsering believes that as long as one persists in his/her dream, he/she can change the fate. After persistent striving, dreams will come true.
