
Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture (Garze Prefecture in short) lies in the west of Sichuan province and on the edge of south-east of Qinghai-Tibetan plateau. It covers an area of 15,3000 square kilometers and has a population of 1,120,000. Garze Prefecture includes 18 counties, i.e., Kangding, Luding, Danba, Jiulong, Yajiang, Daofu, Luhuo, Ganzi, Xinlong, Dege, Baiyu, Shiqu, Seda, Litang, Batang, Xiangcheng, Daocheng, Derong, 325 towns, and 2,679 administrative villages. Kangding, the capital of Garze Prefecture, is the political, economic and cultural centre, and it is credited as hometown of love melody because of word-famous “Kangding Love Song”. Garze Prefecture is rich in water resources and geothermic resources. It is an ideal home to a large diversity of rare wildlife, such as giant panda, red panda, golden monkey, white-lipped deer, and so on. Garze Prefecture is abundant in such precious traditional Chinese medicines as rhizoma gastrodiae, caterpillar fungus, fritillaria, and radix astragali. In addition, it also abounds in minerals, such as gold, silver, copper, ferrum, molybdenum, lithium, marble, and granite.
Garze prefecture is predominantly inhabited by Tibetans, but besides Tibetan, 22 ethnic nationalities, such as Han, Yi, Qiang, Hui are living here. Thus, Garze Prefecture boasts a long history, brilliant ethnic cultural diversity, and colorful ethnic customs.
