Tseten Drolma is a Tibetan singer whose songs have been sung for over half a century, marking a new era of her own. Her voice has accompanied people for generations, leaving unforgettable memories in their hearts.

Let’s get close to her artistic career to learn how her voice is spread to the entire China from the plateau and later to the whole world.

Tseten Drolma, 79, has been on the stage for 60 whole years. During this period, her voice is spread to the inland of China from the plateau, and then to the entire world. For her, it all started from a simple dream when she was young.

When she was eleven or twelve, she went to herd the sheep and cows with my partners, singing all the way. At that time, the herding place was vast without any disturbance.

After Tibet was liberated peacefully, there was an art troupe of the Eighteenth Army. They often made rehearsals in their residence, singing, dancing and playing instruments. Because she lived near to them, so she felt excited to hear them.

At that time they needed to collect water in the neighborhood of their residence, which is a little far from their home. While they were collecting water, others were dancing.

And Tseten Drolma along with her companies, sat down and saw them dancing and singing. After that, they hurried to collect water and got back home. Later, Tseten Drolma came back to see them again. She really envied them and began to dream that how wonderful it would be if she got a chance herself.

A chance fell on her when she was fourteen. Although she was young, she was ambitious. For she showed great interest on singing, she was introduced to join the Women’s Federation and became a young singer.

After that, there was a youth conference for Tibet. A man and Tseten Drolma were selected as the representatives of their region to sing a duet in Lhasa.

It’s the first formal performance in her life.Every performer was dressed up formally in Lhasa.

Since then, Tseten Drolma began her career as a singer. An outdoor site and simple rhythms are her stages. Some time later, singing gradually became her career from the original interest. And she wanted to learn singing harder.

In 1957, to reserve talents for Tibet’s longer development, the ethnic junior college of Shanghai Conservatory of Music began to recruit students.

Not having learning any professional musical knowledge, she stepped into the national advanced musical school-Shanghai Conservatory of Music with her good voice. However, she met the language barrier the first time she got into the inland of China.

Tseten Drolma learned over there for almost six years in total. And she had two major problems. One is the language, the other is the musical knowledge.

For the latter, because she have never learnt about it, Tseten Drolma just sat and observed.

She saw the teacher wrote four numbers, from one to four. Tseten Drolma was wondering what he wanted to do.

The teacher began to teach us the music book. After class, Tseten Drolma met her singing teacher.

He asked me about my learning. Tseten Drolma told him that she couldn’t understand what the numbers meant.

There were many students in their class. He just smiled and told her once linked together, they could make up a complete song.
