The first 25 years, Zhu Jinyong taught both Mandarin and mathematics. In recent years, he decided to pass local cultures and skills on to the children, including the Qiang embroidery.

The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake destroyed the school and Zhu Jinyong resumed classes in other places. After coming back one year later, he found that the students cared more about the outside world, and lacked confidence for the cultures of their hometown. To draw the young generation’s attention to their own cultural traditions, Mr. Zhu started collecting materials and helping teach local culture.

“Students should know the elder generations’ positive attitude and the spirit of toughness towards difficulties.” Said Zhu Jinyong.

Through years of study, students have learned lots of folk songs, and the children’s chorus has been invited to perform in other places.

On the platform, Mr. Zhu is never tired of instructing others, and have cultivated lots of students. In life, he has suffered from diseases. In 2010, Zhu Jinyong was diagnosed with cancer and had a liver transplant. He needs to take pills all his life.

In 2013, Mr. Zhu was awarded the Inheritor of Aba Prefecture’s Intangible Cultural Heritage. In 2015, he won the 1st Ma Yun Rural Teacher Prize. He says he is healthy enough to do lots of work before retirement.
