DECHEN, June 30 (Kangba TV)--In Gemerong Village, Dechen County of Diqing Prefecture, there is a female official, who leads local villagers building the remote, mountainous and impoverished Gemerong into a happy land. She is Li Ruiying, party secretary of the village and director of Gemerong women’s federation.

Villagers of Gemerong used to plant maize, soybean, wheat, etc. for a living for a long time. With the help of government officials, more and more villagers in Gemerong start to plant medicinal materials. Though at first, many villagers were reluctant to try this new business.

Li Ruiying was quite anxious. To set an example, she contracted dozens of mu of land to plant platycodon grandiflorum, radix psammosilenes and other medicinal materials.

Since 2012, medicinal material base of Li Ruiying has shown strong momentum of development. Villagers who were reluctant to plant medicinal materials are now visiting Li and learning from her in succession. Li patiently teaches villagers cultivation skills from door to door.

With the help of Li Ruiying, villagers plunge into medicinal materials planting with immense zeal. Now, medicinal materials planting is on track and villagers have increased their income.

In 2015, Gemerong Village’s gross revenue reached 10.47 million yuan and the average income of farmers rose to 5,368 yuan. Among the revenue, medicinal materials revenue accounted for 1.42 million yuan, honey revenue accounted for 1.1 million yuan and walnut revenue accounted for 893,000 yuan.
