Tashilhunpo Monastery holds religious dance festival

SHIGATSE, Sep. 26 (Kangba TV) -- Tashilhunpo Monastery, the preaching place of all Panchen Lamas, held the traditional religious dance festival on September 22, the 2nd day of the 8th month on Tibetan calendar, in order to drive out evil spirits, pray for peace and property and good weather for the crops. The festival will last until September 24.

It is learned that the religious dance, known as Chams in Tibetan, is performed by monks. It enjoys a history of more than 200 years. Every year, Tashilhunpo Monastery, located in Shigatse, Tibet Autonomous Region, holds the religious dance activity in the 8th month on Tibetan calendar.

During the activity, monks wear masks and costumes, and perform religious dance regarding Vajra, skeleton spirits, ordained monk, deer of longevity, etc. With slow tempo, the dance renders a solemn and mysterious atmosphere.

Established in 1447, Tashilhunpo Monastery is the main monastery of the Panchen Lama, and one of the monasteries of Gelug Sect of Tibetan Buddhism.
