Tibetan boots are made of cowhide and cow tendon and decorated with Tibetan pulu (woolen product).

Tibetan boots are hand-made, colorful, damp-proof, cold-resistant and durable.

The making skill of Tibetan boots enjoys a history of more than 1,000 years, and is dubbed “a brilliant pearl” of Tibetan traditional clothing culture.

The making skill of Tibetan boots is closely related with Gadong Township, Bainang County, Shigatse, Tibet Autonomous Region.

The making skill of Gadong Tibetan boots is listed as an intangible cultural heritage of Shigatse.

However, the inheritance of this skill was once in an adverse condition.

For a long time, common people could not afford Tibetan boots, due to the hand-made making skill, low production, complicated craft and high price.

As a result, the market of Tibetan boots shrank.

Moreover, as the traditional craftsmen of Tibetan boots passed away one after another, the skill failed in inheritance and was on the edge of being lost.

Pasang Tsering is 42 years old. He started learning the making skill of Tibetan boots in 1989.

In 2012, he established Gadong Xingwang Traditional Clothing Farmers’ Cooperative.

He trained local impoverished people in hand-made skill and promoted the making skill of Gadong Tibetan boots.

Now, Pasang Tsering’s enterprise is Tibet’s largest factory of Tibetan boots, and he also opened sub-branches in Lhasa and Guangdong.

Though Tibetan boots are still expensive, ordinary people can afford them. Tibetan boots have become a must-have in festivals for Tibetan people.

Gadong Tibetan boots have become popular again in the market, and only those who place an order in advance can buy the boots.
