Publish Time: 2017-09-08 Author: Tian Ruolin From: Kangba TV

Yu Jianhua is a 65-year-old monkey protector in Shangri-La Yunnan Snub-nosed Monkey National Park. Generally, he gets up at 05:30 every day and prepares food for Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys after breakfast. This is his daily schedule for 22 years.

Yu Jianhua’s home is in the national park. Surprisingly, he used to be the best hunter in his village. Yu Jianhua recalled, “I hunted to make a living when I was young.” He stopped hunting to protect Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys in the 1990s.

Shangri-La Yunnan Snub-nosed Monkey National Park in Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Yunnan Province was open to the public in 2009 and Yu Jianhua has been hired as a monkey protector since then.

Yu Zhonghua, son of Yu Jianhua, is different from his father. The 30-year-old son has been hired by a protection station of Yunnan Baima Snow Mountain National Nature Reserve in 2003 because of his rich knowledge on plants. Yu Zhonghua loves to collect plant specimens and learns related knowledge online.

Shangri-La Yunnan Snub-nosed Monkey National Park is located in Yunnan Baima Snow Mountain National Nature Reserve. Many local people increase income via tourism and they have been aware of the importance of protecting environment and wild animals.

Yu Zhonghua said mountains nearby when he was young were bare while now they are covered with lush woods. Some forests are too thick and human can hardly step in.

As the environment improves, the number of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys rises. Statistics show that the number of Yunnan snub-nosed monkeys observable in the national park is about 60, coming from 11 families. In addition, nine monkeys are born in 2017. These adorable monkeys have drawn many visitors.

Senior Yu and junior Yu all agree that “Only a well-protected environment can benefit the future generations.”
