“After arriving in Bachen County, Nagchu Prefecture, we work until sunset at 20:00 every day. Now, our teeth are the whitest part on the face,” Hong Binfeng, head of Bachen rural power grid upgrading project said, “We are trying our best to overcome all difficulties and complete the project as soon as possible.”

The 12 billion yuan Tibet rural power grid upgrading project started in December 2016, which is the largest aid-Tibet project for State Grid Corporation of China. Among the investment, 61,429,500 yuan will be put in Bachen County.

Hong said, “Bachen part of the project was initiated in March 2017. The construction period on the plateau is short and construction work is extremely difficult. Bachen County is in the snow season in March and April and rainy season in June. Frozen earth, landslides and debris flows are all obstacles for construction.”

“We will feel anoxic and have a headache after climbing two base electric poles. Generally, three staff take care of one base electric pole and they can finish the hardware installation of four base electric poles one day, which can be doubled on plain areas,” Wang Yonglong, a power worker, said.

With the support of State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Company, Bachen County is expected to be connected to Tibet’s major power grid in late August. By then, 3,868 farming and herding households will have steady and ceaseless power.

Kagyu, a villager from Sangda Village, benefits from this project a lot. Sangda Village is about ten kilometers away from Bachen County, where local farming and herding households can only generate power via solar panels and store power via accumulators.

Power generated by the solar panels can only support electric lamps, televisions, buttered tea machine and a freezer.

In winter when the sunshine is poor, the power generated by the solar panels cannot support the freezer for a month. Hence, beef in the freezer may rot. This project will put an end to this situation.

Power workers wearing red helmets are quite eye-catching in the green mountains and under the azure sky.
