Circling Fields Festival

The name of this festival in Tibetan is Ongkar. Ong means “field”, and kar means “circumambulate”. Circling the farm fields is a folk ritual, in which people pray for a good harvest.

Striking a yak horn

In the “striking a yak horn with stones” sport, each village sends 10 representatives to participate in three rounds of competition. In each round, each competitor throws three times. It is said that the throw indicates if there will be a bumper harvest in the coming year. If the throw misses, the competitor has to tie the yak horns to his belt and walk around the village once, so that everyone can taunt him for the miss. The sport both celebrates the New Year and pray for good weather in the coming year.
