The 12th Namtso Hiking Rally to kick off on Aug. 11

The 12th Namtso Hiking Rally, an important event of 2018 Shoton Festival, will be held from August 11 to 15.

It is learned from the 12th Namtso Hiking Rally’s press meeting that 240 people will participate in the hiking rally this year, triple the number of last year. 

Registration sites have been set up in Chongqing, Chengdu and Lhasa. Running enthusiasts from the media industry and sector pioneers are invited in a bid to promote the brand influence of Namtso Hiking Rally. 

Three stations will be established along the course and local herdsmen will be organized to help participants experience traditional Tibetan customs, like kneading tsampa, making buttered tea, weaving yak hair rope, etc. In addition, three supply stations will be built to provide supplies and rest area.

The hiking rally consists of two phases. Participants will experience Shoton Festival activities, including its opening ceremony, variety show, Buddha painting show in Drepung Monastery, Tibetan opera in Norbulingka, yoghurt drinking contest, etc. in phase I. 

In phase II, participants will take a bus ride to Namtso’s Tashi Island, Damxung County from Lhasa, and take part in the walking convention. 

Participants can walk and appreciate the sereneness of Namtso Lake and magnificence of Mt. Nyanchen Thanglha. Meanwhile, participants are called on to collect personal and other people's litter to better conserve Namtso Lake’s ecological environment. 

Statistics of World Tourism Organization show that the output value of the sports tourism sector surpassed 500 billion euro in 2017. Besides, sports tourism increases by 14 percent annually and becomes the fastest growing part of tourism. Namtso Hiking Rally is an example case of Lhasa’s endeavor.
